Sample Processing - Safe Working Practice
LUDOX - SAFE WORKING PRACTICE
- Ludox is an aqueous solution of colloidal silica. Although non-toxic it can cause irritation and/or a rash on contact with the skin and eyes and excessive contact with the eyes can cause lachrymation and blurred vision. Inhalation of dust particles from dried out ludox can cause irritation of the lungs and breathing difficulties.
- Ludox must be stored in clearly marked, tightly stoppered containers.
- When using ludox, laboratory coats, chemical safety glasses and rubber gloves must be worn. After use, hands must be thoroughly washed before handling food or drink.
- Processing samples with ludox should be confined to specific areas. Ludox must not be allowed to dry out and form dust particles. All glassware and bench surfaces must be thoroughly washed after use.
- Dilute solutions of ludox may be disposed of down the sink.
- In cases of contact with hands or eyes, wash affected area with copious quantities of clean water. In cases of severe eye contact, see a doctor.
- Further information on the effects of silica can be obtained in the HSE publications listed below, obtainable from bookshops.
